This short guide walks you step-by-step through installing and using Ledger Live on desktop — from setup and device connection to sending/receiving crypto and keeping your funds secure. Use the headings (H1–H5) to scan quickly and jump to details you need.
Ledger Live is the official desktop application for managing cryptocurrencies with your Ledger hardware wallet. It lets you install apps on your device, add accounts, check balances, send and receive assets, and access portfolio analytics — all while keeping private keys offline on your Ledger device.
Anyone new to Ledger hardware wallets or Ledger Live desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) who wants a clear, practical setup and first-use walkthrough.
Never enter your recovery phrase into any app, website, or digital file. Ledger will never ask for your full recovery phrase in Ledger Live.
Go to the official Ledger website and download Ledger Live for your operating system. Only download from the official source to avoid scams.
Run the installer, follow on-screen prompts, then open Ledger Live. On first run you’ll be asked whether you’re setting up a new device or already have one.
Select Create a new wallet if you bought the device new, or Restore device if you have an existing 24-word recovery phrase. Follow the device prompts to set a PIN and write down the recovery sheet provided with the device.
Make sure your device screen matches the words shown in Ledger Live during any critical step — hardware confirmation is the security backbone.
In Ledger Live's Manager, install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to use (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). After installation, go to Accounts → Add account
and follow the prompts while your device is connected.
Ledger Live supports many assets and tokens — add multiple accounts to manage them in one place.
Select the account, click Receive, connect your device and verify the on-screen address on your Ledger device before sharing it. Always confirm the full address on the device itself.
Click Send, enter the recipient address and amount, then validate the transaction details on your Ledger device before approving.
Your 24-word recovery phrase is the only backup of your private keys. Store it offline in a secure place — consider multiple safe locations or a hardware backup service.
Never share your recovery phrase or PIN. Beware of phishing sites and impostor support accounts asking for secrets.
Enable auto-lock, keep software up to date, and verify addresses on the device screen — not on your computer.
Explore official Ledger documentation for deep dives on advanced features like staking, NFTs, and third-party integrations. Practice small transactions first to build confidence.
